Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled coupe.
The Last Word is a really fun drink. Gin, Green Chartreuse, Maraschino, and lime juice come together to create a funky, herbal, tart and just overall awesome cocktail. Green Chartreuse is one of the most interesting liqueurs on the market, the strong herbal flavor shines through and delivers a little extra punch with it's 55% ABV (110 proof). It's one of the more expensive bottles on my bar shelf, but it's worth every penny. We normally see a 750ml bottle sold for somewhere between $55-$65, depending on what state you are in. If you can find it in a 375ml bottle, that helps to ease the strain on your wallet.
The Last Word is an old drink, prohibition era old. It was created at the Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit, Michigan. In the early 2000s, Murray Stenson started serving the cocktail again at the Zig Zag Cafe in Seattle, Washington. It became very popular with bartenders and remains so today.
You'll notice there's no added sugar in this drink, but the sweetness of both the Maraschino liqueur and the Green Chartreuse balance the acidity of the lime juice. The Last Word is equal parts, so it's really easy to remember the recipe. Don't be surprised if this becomes one of your favorite cocktails, it's certainly one of mine.
